My family voted, and their favorite choice for identifying the mystery utensil item was this entry,
"I think its a country veterinarian's tongue depressor. You'd need weight to keep a cow's tongue down, and a string to pull it out if they decided to eat it."
I really don't know if we are any closer to solving the mystery, but it was fun!

I think I know what this is! Last night, I was watching Good Eats - and Alton Brown was using something that looks EXACTLY like this - but bigger...and it was a meat pounder/meat tenderizer.
